About the Anne Sippi Clinic
The long term or "chronic" schizophrenic patient has either been treated by the physical methods of treatment or has been ignored by professionals steeped in apathy and indifference. For fifteen
years the Anne Sippi Clinic, a residential treatment program in Los Angeles, has struggled to develop a cost effective treatment approach which poses a representative challenge to those who believe that nothing
can reach these human beings in a substantive manner.
The Anne Sippi Clinic offers a planned treatment program for each individual resident with an understanding that each patient has unique qualities. Based on our belief that people can change given the right
conditions and an optimistic outlook, we will point out a Bio-Psycho-Social treatment program that does indeed fulfill the promise implied in the words "treatment program". The authors will present a
detailed description of this treatment program, defining biological, psychological, social and rehabilitative methods. The authors will also describe the cost effective nature of this treatment concept. We have
for fifteen years worked to recognize, develop and refine new directions in treatment and quality of life improvements for the long term mentally ill. This is the therapeutic zeitgeist. Now that the challenge
has been issued, we will present a realistic answer. Implicit in our program is the hope and belief in the potential for change in even the most regressed patients. Treatment resistance is an erroneous term,
resistance to treatment is tantamount to the fear of change, we strongly believe that the professional therapist is the most resistant individual in the therapeutic dyad.
The Anne Sippi Clinic represents a concept of treatment that began its development long before the clinic opened its doors in 1978. Treatment is based on the principles developed by Jack Rosberg, an
internationally known psychologist and psychotherapist who developed the Anne Sippi Clinic model some two decades ago.
There are many levels of this condition called schizophrenia and of course many ideas about the potential for change with these needy human beings. Attitude and hope has much to do with shaping the course
of treatment and reaching with good contact, those patients who are considered unreachable. Schizophrenics have survival needs, as do all people. Those individuals including those with schizophrenia can have
their hope renewed if we show them that there are pathways out of the illness.
It has been our choice and our experience to work with those who have the poorest prognosis. Patients who many consider to be treatment resistant and whose condition is so severe that it persuades many
professionals to do no more than to make treatment as expedient as possible, often relying only on the administration of medication.
